Tranent Meetings Third Thursday of the month in the Tranmere Hotel.
About the area Tranent is one of East Lothian's principal towns. It is situated on a limestone ridge 10 miles east of Edinburgh and can boast about its views over the Firth of Forth and it also overlooks Longniddry. The Inner Wheel Club of Tranent was formed by the wives of the Tranent Rotarians in1984 and was later joined by the wives of Longniddry Rotarians. In days gone by, Tranent was a staging post between London and Edinburgh when many travellers frequented the taverns situated in Tranent's main street. Tranent's importance has been largely from mining where Monks worked as early as the 13th.Century. Agriculture and Distilling are also of great importance. Tranent has a lot of history surrounding it. Mary Queen of Scots dined in Tranent during her stay at nearby Seton Palace and during the 1745 Rising, Jacobite troops took up positions in Tranent before the Battle of Prestonpans. In 1797 the notorious Massacre of Tranent took place where s strong willed woman called Jackie Crookston stood up and roused townsfolk with her cry of "Nae Militia" which caused a riot and made mere soldiers panic and flee. There is a statue of Jackie in Tranent's town centre. |
