About the area
Our Club consists of members drawn from three areas forming the Eastern Borders.
Eyemouth
Most people will have heard of Eyemouth because of the terrible fishing disaster in1881, when 129 men of a population of less than 3000 perished in a single afternoon. It was a cataclysm which rocked the little town and is rightly remembered as "Black Friday", but there is much more to Eyemouth than the Disaster. The town positively reeks of history.
The Bay of Eyemouth is virtually the only safe landing place in Berwickshire. There has almost certainly been a settlement where the River Eye meets the sea for many centuries. A Harbour was first noted in the 13th.Century,but the village took on a special importance after Scotland's major port of Berwick was lost to the old enemy in the 1840's
Kelso
Situated on the banks of the River Tweed at its junction with the Teviot, the Royal Burgh of Kelso with its historic 12th. Century Abbey is an ideal place to use as a base for exploring the Borders, the Berwickshire Coast and North Northumberland. Described by Sir Walter Scott as "The most beautiful if not the most romantic village in Scotland", it has kept that atmosphere which he loved.
Duns
Duns, with its motto, "Duns dings a", is the former County Town of Berwickshire, and is at the centre of a district unrivalled for scenic beauty and historic interest. Situated as it is in the lovely Vale of Merse, the "Garden of the Borderland", Duns can offer the restful quietude and bracing air of an ideal holiday resort and its convenient and central position makes it the natural starting point from which the many famous places for which the district is so noted may be visited.
